When creating logos, stickers, product photos, or any asset that needs to sit on top of another background, the traditional workflow is: generate an image, then run it through a background-removal tool — and deal with edge halos and fringing.

Now Image-2 lets you choose a background mode at generation time, producing a true alpha-channel PNG/WebP in one step — no post-processing needed.

Three Background Modes

In the settings panel you'll find a "Background" dropdown with three options:

ModeMeaningBest for
AutoThe model decides whether to include a backgroundGeneral creation when you're unsure
OpaqueAlways generates a full backgroundLandscapes, architecture, complete scenes
TransparentOutputs an image with an alpha channelLogos, icons, stickers, product shots, overlay assets

How to Generate a Transparent Background Image

  1. Open image-2.net and enter your prompt;
  2. In the settings panel, find the "Background" dropdown and select "Transparent";
  3. The output format is automatically restricted to PNG or WebP (if JPEG is currently selected, the system switches it to PNG and shows a notification);
  4. Click Generate — the resulting image has a real alpha channel and can be placed directly on any background.

Important Notes on Generating Transparent Background Images with GPT-Image-2

You Must Explicitly Select "Transparent" — Mentioning It in the Prompt Is Not Enough

This is the most common pitfall: if the Background option is left on "Auto" and you only write "transparent background" in your prompt, the model will likely just paint something that looks transparent (such as a checkerboard pattern or a plain white fill) — but the file itself does not contain an alpha channel. It's effectively a "fake transparent" image, like the example below:

Only selecting "Transparent" in the Background dropdown guarantees that the output file actually carries an alpha channel.

Output Format Restrictions

Transparent mode only supports PNG and WebP. JPEG cannot store an alpha channel, so:

  • If you select a transparent background while the format is set to JPEG, the system automatically switches the format to PNG;
  • Conversely, while the background is set to "Transparent", the JPEG option in the format dropdown becomes disabled.

Prompt Tips for Cleaner Edges

Although selecting "Transparent" mode is all that's needed for the alpha channel, you can get cleaner subject edges — easier compositing — by adding phrases such as:

  • "isolated subject"
  • "clean background" or "simple background"
  • "no shadow on ground"

This reduces semi-transparent fringing around the subject and makes the final composite look more natural.
